Making a large windscreen for microphones on the cheap

I needed bigger wind protection for my handheld recoding setup but scoffed at the high prices for the name brand options. I am a field recording hobbyist (at best), so spending bug bucks is out of the question. After building some smaller, slide-on wind protection for my small capsule mics, I knew I could build something similar to Rycote ORTF windshield.

After a couple of weeks stewing on the idea, I found my structure. Two, Dollar Store metal baskets would fit a stereo bar. I still had half of a 3M filtrete and audio transparent fuzzy fabric from a previous build so just needed to figure out the hardware. For this, I ended up using a pair of metal brace plates, drilled through the center to accept the 1/4″ threaded rod I am using to hold the stereo bar and the handle. It took a couple of 1/4″ coupling nuts, and a a couple of microphone mounting adapters to get it solid.

I have tested this fuzz and filter on a smaller scale so this should work great. Hoping to get some testing time in this week.

I am all in at less than $40. and really happy with the results.

UPDATE: 09.02.2024

I finally had to chance to do more than a front yard test and I am really pleased with the results. I went down to the marina on a mild day this setup does not disappoint.

Tested and really happy with the results.
